Natural Home Remedies for Cold-Like Symptoms

Ah it’s that time of year. School is starting and… did I just see a leaf fall on the ground?

I love Fall, as do most. But I don’t like how the change of seasons brings on unwanted germs and sniffles. Once one sibling gets it, they all do. And nobody has time for a sick household.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve done my best to resort to medicine only when absolutely necessary. If I can limit the amount of toxins and chemicals going into my body, that’s a win. Antibiotics bring your body lower and it’s like your immune system has to start over. I just try to not let it get to that point.

When I eliminate toxins from my day like, using all-natural makeup, cleaners and detergents, I’m giving my body a break. Instead of my body having to process those chemicals, it can focus on keeping my body healthy from other bacteria and viruses.

Preventative Care

A full night’s rest, healthy meals and drinking lots of water are obvious but important to put at the top of the list. Limiting trips to Chic-Fil-A and choosing water over sweet tea can be hard, I know. Especially when you have dance class, volleyball practice and everything else to juggle.

A Little Exercise Never Hurt

Sweating is also a good way to get some of those toxins out of your body. Make it a part of your routine to walk around your neighborhood for 30 minutes before dinner! Who said kids were the only ones who could have a sticker chart. Make a plan and stick with it – your body will thank you! Why not lose a couple inches, improve your heart rate AND get rid of toxins all at the same time.

Thieves Hand Sanitizer

Another little trick I have up my sleeve is Thieves Hand Sanitizer. I carry this little bottle around with me everywhere. It’s easy to throw one in your purse, your car and even in your kid’s lunch boxes. It smells like Christmas, gets rid of germs but most importantly, it keeps the good bacteria. It’s also moisturizing so unlike most hand sanitizers, it doesn’t leave your hands feeling dry.

Thieves Essential Oil

So, what’s this Thieves stuff? It’s an essential oil blend by Young Living that is known for its immune system support.

The old tale is that, during the plague, thieves would steal from the sick. They would go into their homes, steal their processions and the authorities were confused. How were they going into these plagued homes and NOT getting sick? The thieves confessed their secret. They covered themselves in natural herbs and spices that put up a shield. And so, Young Living bottled that goodness up like Clove and Cinnamon.

We roll the Thieves essential oil on the bottoms of our feet before bed. We also keep it running in the diffuser during the day. And if we really need an extra boost, I will add a few drops to an empty capsule and take it internally.

I’m not sure with how familiar you are with essential oils but I highly recommend Thieves. It comes in the starter kit and has seriously changed our lives!

Supplements and Antioxidants

Get you some vitamins!! Make sure you are getting a daily vitamin that also includes vitamin C, iron and zinc. I know I’ve mentioned Young Living a couple times so far, they have a full line of supplements including a Master Formula that can prepare your body for the changing of seasons!

It’s also important to add probiotics to your diet. Build up the healthy bacteria in your gut as a preventative measure.

You also need to add antioxidants to your diet as well. Antioxidants are said to help neutralize free radicals in our bodies, and this is thought to boost overall health.

Fruit like blueberries and strawberries are high in antioxidants. Dark chocolate and kale also antioxidant rich. Shocker, but, Young Living has a wonderful drink called NingXia Red. It’s main component is the wolfberry or goji berry. Two ounces of NingXia Red is similar to over 800 blueberries. A few sample packets of are including in the starter kit so you can try it out.

Natural Remedies

Ok, so what if you are beginning to feel under the weather. There is something brewing and you’re a little off your game. What do you do to try and stop it in its tracks to eliminate doctor visits and time off?

Head Tension

I keep a bottle of Peppermint with me at all times. I place a roller top on it and when I feel some tension on my temples, I roll peppermint on. It might just be the cooling sensation that distracts me or it could really be some magic. Either way, I don’t leave my house without it. I haven’t taken Advil or Tylenol in years!

Upset Stomach

Speaking of Peppermint, just a few sniffs of this can ease nausea. It’s incredible. I also like the essential oil, DiGize. When my stomach is feeling off or even if I just ate too much, this essential oil is great for speeding things up or slowing things down. It a matter of minutes, I’m feeling back to normal.

Sore Throat

I should mention that if you really do feel sick, you should seek medical attention. None of these are guaranteed to heal anything.

When I feel my throat doing that thing where you’re like, hmm, it feels like I swallowed a cactus, make a hot cup of Thieves and Honey tea. Remember how I told you about Thieves immunity powers? You’re going to add a drop or two of Thieves essential oil and a spoonful of honey to a cup of hot water. Stir and drink. It’s incredibly soothing. Not only are you relieving your throat, you’re also getting those immunity oils in your system! You can also add lemon oil to it too for a refreshing lemon-y taste!

Tight Chest

Sometimes it’s just the cold weather, but if you need some assistance in “opening up”, add a couple drops of Raven to a teaspoon of coconut oil. Rub this all over your chest. Cup your hands and take a few deep breaths. Raven is another Young Living essential oil that is a must-have during the fall and winter months. Raven is a blend of Ravintsara, Peppermint, Eucalyptus Radiata, Lemon, and Wintergreen essential oils.

Stuffy Nose

Eucalyptus has to be one of my all-time favorite smells. Regardless of feeling under the weather, I open this bottle to smell it on the daily. And it really comes in handy when the seasons start to change.

When my nose is stopped up, I like to get a sink full of hot water. I add a few drops of Eucalyptus and R.C. (another Young Living Blend). I bend over the sink and drape a towel over my head, completely enclosing my face where I can really breathe in the steam.

R.C. is a blend of many oils including three different kinds of Eucalyptus, Lavender and Peppermint. I’m sure you can guess what “R” and “C” stand for.

Poor Sleep

When I prioritize my sleep, I see a huge change in my energy levels and health. A good night’s rest can really turn it around when you’re feeling down. Drink water before going to bed. Keep your sheets clean. Turn your A.C. on or use a fan if it’s still warm August through October. In the colder months, use a heated blanket. Because I live in an apartment, I also use a noise machine. I also read before bed instead of scrolling through my phone or watching tv.

I like to use essential oils too. Lavender is an amazing oil that calms you down and gets your mind in a restful state. I put it in a roller bottle and roll it on my wrists and diffuse it. It’s very helpful in getting a great night’s sleep.

There are many ways you can practice preventative health like making sure everyone is eating well, getting their vitamins and sleeping well. But, you can also introduce natural sources like essential oils into your routine.

It’s worth the hype, essential oils are incredibly useful! As long as you by high-quality essential oils, you can see a difference in your family’s health.
