I recently read the “Top Lash Serums” post on the Today Show’s blog and they ranged from $35 to $150. And I understand, some people are into spending money. But I’m not and definitely not on lash serum. $150 can cover a flight to a new place or 15 decent bottles of wine!
Lash-boosting serum or eyebrow growth serum does exactly what it sounds like. It’s going to boost the hair-growth in your eyelashes and eyebrows.
So, today, I am sharing with you a DIY lash serum that is both cost-effective and safe.
Why make your own lash serum?
I researched a few of those top lash serums and, of course, found a few ingredients that should never be put on a human body.
Ingredients like, DMDM Hydantoin, Imidazolidinyl, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin and fragrance. Can you pronounce more than 1 of those?
I don’t want to bore you with the science but just want to explain the first one. DMDM Hydantoin. This is a chemical that is used in cosmetics as a preserver. But it’s a huge allergen and is a substance that can release formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is a cancer-causing toxin, y’all! Don’t put this stuff on your face!

I am a realist. I know I am never going to eliminate all chemicals from my life. But eliminating just a few will have a long-term effect. And for a product as frivolous as lash-boost serum, I don’t need to add more chemicals, ya know?
It is best to put this on your lashes and eyebrows before you go to sleep. And it’s advised to then wash your face, including your eye lashes and eye brows in the morning. This isn’t a primer, so no need to put it on before mascara. In fact, because it’s oil, it will probably make it harder for you mascara to stick to your lashes.
Ingredients: Lash-Boosting Serum
You will need, castor oil or jojoba oil and your favorite essential oils that promote hair growth. I suggest Young Living lavender, cedarwood and rosemary. You will also need an empty mascara tube and wand.
Curious about Young Living? Check out my previous post on the three reasons I choose the Young living brand!
But may I also suggest this super cute empty lashes tube with your choice of label from my Etsy shop?
So, as a warning, it’s going to be hard to fill your tube because chances are, it’s not going to be clear. I suggest mixing up a larger batch of lash serum and storing it in a dropper bottle and refilling the tube as needed.
Directions: Lash-Boosting Serum
I give you options for carrier oil because both are great for hair growth and safe to put on your skin. It will probably come down to what you already have on hand and which is cheapest. Either will work great. I decided to use jojoba oil. It smells better to me, too!
In a 2oz dropper bottle, you are going to add 10 drops of Lavender, 10 drops of Cedarwood and 10 drops of Rosemary. Add either castor oil or jojoba oil to fill the rest of the bottle. If you’re using a 4oz dropper bottle, double the recipe.
Shake up the bottle to get all the oil mixed together. This is your big batch of lash and brow serum!
Time to fill the tube! Some tubes will have a little rubber piece called a reducer. That’s the part that makes your mascara “pop” when you take the wand out. You’ll need to remove that or your oil won’t go down into the tube. It looks similar to the plastic piece in your essential oil bottle. If you buy the mascara tube from my shop, the reducer is already out. But when you refill your tube, remember to take it out.
Using the dropper, add the lash-boosting serum from your dropper bottle to the empty mascara tube.
Remember, you’ll need to leave room for the wand, so don’t fill it to the top. Since you can refill it, it’s best to play it safe and put less than overfill. You don’t want it to run down your tube – the label will come off and it’s just messy.
Put the reducer back in the tube. And secure your wand.
Store the dropper bottle and your lash serum tube in a cool dark place like a drawer or cabinet. Remember to shake the mixture before you apply.
Apply each night on clean eye lashes and brows. Watch them naturally grow without any of those chemicals we talked about earlier. THANK YOU essential oils! Saving the day once again.
